“Just Reading Books is not Sufficient for Skill Development. Practice in the Domain is Required”. For any Professions in the World, For Example, Professors, Doctors, Scientists, Engineers, Lawyers, Accountants, Even Drivers, Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, etc. If we take any Profession in the world, Just Reading Books, Manuals, Journals is not Sufficient. This Management Insight Highlights the Importance of Practice, .i.e. Practice Required for any Profession. Lets, Consider Following Two Different Categories of Professions:
- Knowledge Workers: this Category of Workers First Educate Themselves in Formal Colleges and Universities by Pursuing Professional Degrees, Higher Graduate and Post Graduate Degrees. This Category of Workers First They Read Books, Build Knowledge Base, and Then Join Specific Profession. In Profession/Job, They Use Knowledge Base Built in their College Days and Work Practice in that Profession. Because of Hands on Work in the Profession, They Gain Different Skill Set in Addition to the Earlier Built Knowledge Base. These Kind of Professions include Professors, Doctors, Engineers, Scientists, Lawyers, Pharmacists, and Technologists. Gaining Skill in these Professions Required Having Knowledge Base from College Days. That is, all these Professions Require Formal Education.
- Vocational Workers: these People also build Certain Knowledge Base Over a Period of Time; But not in a Formal Way but Through Informal Ways. Their Knowledge Base Building Won’t Happen as is The Case with Knowledge Workers in the Form of College Degrees. But it Happens Though Hands on Practice with Experienced Mentors or Group Leaders. This Category of Vocational Workers include Electricians, Plumbers, Drivers, Carpenters. As We Know, for Driving, Studying Just Drivers Learning Manual is not Sufficient. One has to Get on to the Road and Practice. Similarly, Electricians, Plumbers; they need to be Hands on; that Gives them the Different Skill Set Such as Identification of the Problem, Diagnosing Solution, Finding Faults, Rightly Addressing the Issue in Electrical and Plumbing Works.
Here, One More Thing is, the Number of Years Spent on the Profession is Immaterial in Certain Cases. For Example, Driving. It does not Matter, Whatever is the Our Number of Years of Driving Experience or Whatever is Our Number of Kilometers of Driving Experience on Roads, There will always be Blind Spots. Thus, Skill comes with Practice. Even Perfect Practice also Can Not Give 100% Skill Set Required in any Profession.
Hence, “Continuous Learning and Continuous Practice Only Keeps us Relevant in any Industry”.
